“I'm not the type for long rallies,” says Martin Allegro. “That's why I need material that helps me to build up a lot of pressure in the first one to three strokes.” The Belgian national player only joined DONIC at the start of 2025, but he immediately found what was perfect for him. He plays the BlueGrip C2 on both sides, as a blade a DONIC Anders Lind Hexa Carbon. “Harder rubbers are good for me, and the sticky surface helps me to generate a lot of rotation,” he says.
Martin Allegro has a good feel for the ball, very good serves and a strong forehand topspin. Footballers who are drawn to the opponent's penalty area are said to have the drive to score, and Allegro is just that type of player: he has a clear drive forward, uncompromising, and that applies not only to the rallies, but also to his career. By qualifying for the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, he has fulfilled a childhood dream, something he has been working towards his entire sporting life. But of course he is still looking ahead: the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles is his next big goal, “but that's still a long way off”, as he says himself. Before then, he wants to establish himself internationally. His sporting CV should include a European Championship medal one day, in doubles or with the Belgian team, he says. In fact, the left-hander is a real doubles specialist. With his compatriot Adrien Rassenfosse, he has been one of the top 20 doubles players in the world for a while now (as of February 2025: 19th place in the doubles world rankings), he has already been Belgian doubles champion three times, and at Bundesliga club TSV Bad Königshofen, where he is already in his third season, he has a 7-2 record with three different doubles partners. Accordingly, TTC Grenzau is already looking forward to the new addition, who will move to the Westerwald for the 2025/26 season. Grenzau's head coach Slobodan Grujic says: “He has already achieved very good results internationally and in the Bundesliga. But I think he can take another step forward.”
Martin Allegro is working hard on this. At 28, he still has a few years to improve and he sees a number of opportunities to do so. “A lot of people only focus on technique, but there are many things you can work on,” he says. A good self-assessment is essential. “In my opinion, the most important thing is to ask yourself every day what you can improve, what wasn't so good in your last training session.”
He shares his apartment in Liège with Chantal Mantz, who, like him, is part of the DONIC family and has been his partner for three years. The couple live just 20 minutes by car from the Belgian table tennis center in Blegny and half an hour from the German border. These are short distances for Martin Allegro, who has consistently been one of the top three players in Belgium for several years. The road to the top of the world is a long one, but Allegro has his goal in mind and a strong partner at his side: DONIC

“For me, DONIC means being perceived not only as an athlete, but also as a person.”
