“My story with DONIC is very special,” says Anders Lind. “When I was ten, eleven, twelve years old, I was considered very talented; I was number one in Europe. But my head wasn't good, and for years I almost only disappointed. Nevertheless, DONIC always stood by me, like only my mother and father did.”
By the 2023 World Championships at the latest, the highly talented left-hander had even exceeded the hopes placed in him: Anders Lind was the only European to reach the quarter-finals in the singles. The eventful history, the long years in which it seemed as if the sensitive youngster might break under the great pressure of expectation, are now behind him. And then there was a serious car accident that almost cost him his life. In March 2021, Anders collided at 110 km/h on the highway near Copenhagen with a car whose driver had suffered a heart attack. He was taken to hospital with several fractured vertebrae, and it wouldn't have taken much for him to end up in a wheelchair. But Anders Lind fought his way back. After three months of almost complete immobility and two months in which he had to painstakingly relearn how to walk, he started training again five days before the 2021 European Team Championships in Romania: 20 minutes a day was enough for him to lose just one singles match in the entire tournament and lead his team to the bronze medal with outstanding performances.
“The accident didn't help, of course,” says Lind, but it was a turning point in his life. “I may have matured five years as a result.” All the mental problems, the difficulties he had experienced in critical situations up until then, the occasional lack of seriousness and discipline, seem to have been overcome since then. His joy of playing, his creativity have always been outstanding. His backhand crescent, the aggressive side cut shot that is internationally known as the “strawberry”, is spectacularly good, his attack is powerful on both sides and difficult to count out. “Perhaps my greatest strength is that my opponents find it very difficult to find a tactic against me,” he explains. “They never know what I'm going to do next, I don't know that myself.”
But there has been one major constant in his game since the beginning of his career, since he was ten years old: “DONIC is my partner, the people there have always been there for me. Not only when I delivered disappointing results so often, but also after my accident. I really hope that I can stay with DONIC for the rest of my career.”
