BLUESTORM Z Series

Redefining Dynamic & Spin – Two Concepts, One Vision

Following the huge success of the BLUEFIRE M Series, which is considered a milestone in terms of dynamics and was the first to reflect the characteristics of rubbers with a fresh glue effect, DONIC pursued its next goal: to develop a rubber series that offers even more dynamics and sets new standards in spin development.

The two goals were to be achieved within one series through two differentiated rubber concepts, combining different pimple geometries and sponge structures. The top priority was to develop products that would appeal equally to players of all classes and playing styles.

The first step in the innovation process was to create a more grippy, high-tension top rubber, which was to be combined with the modified, highly elastic Turbo sponge in blue.

FOCUS ON ROTATION

PIMPLE GEOMETRY

BLUESTORM Z1-TURBO / Z1 (in mm)

Medium-hard geometry with wide pimple heads (1.7mm) and small pimple spacing (0.6mm)

  • Provides a medium-hard ball strike and slightly longer ball contact time
  • In combination with the grippy top rubber, this geometry promotes high spin and rotation potential

Regardless of the sponge, rubbers with wide pimple heads and small pimple spacing play slightly harder and thus promote spin development!

FOCUS ON SPEED

BLUESTORM Z2 / Z3 (in mm)

Softer geometry with slightly narrower pimples and larger pimple spacing

  • Ball contact time is extended, the flexible pimples bring out the elastic properties of the sponge structure more
  • Increased dynamics and catapult effect, bringing the speed characteristics of the rubber more to the fore

The narrower the pimples and the greater the pimple spacing, the softer and more catapult-like the ball contact feeling.

SPONGE STRUCTURE

BLUESTORM Z1-TURBO / Z1

BLUESTORM Z1-Turbo / Z1

  • The degree of the very direct Z1-Turbo is 50°, while the BLUESTORM Z1 is slightly softer and more controlled at 47.5°
  • The highly elastic blue sponge structure of the BLUESTORM Z1-Turbo and Z1 indicates a medium-hard sponge design due to its medium-sized pores.
  • The medium-sized pores, in combination with the harder pimple geometry, result in less compression of the rubber at the point of ball contact.
  • The harder the sponge, the finer its structure and the thicker the pimples, the more direct the ball contact and the lower the catapult effect on balls hit head-on.
large pores

BLUESTORM Z2 / Z3

BLUESTORM Z2 / Z3

  • The sponge hardness of the Z2 is 47.5°, while that of the Z3 is 42.5°.
  • Unlike the BLUESTORM Z1-Turbo and Z1, the sponge of both the BLUESTORM Z2 and Z3 variants has large pores.
  • The large pores and thin cell walls allow for increased compression at the point of ball contact, which, thanks to the highly elastic properties of the sponge, ensures that the ball is catapulted out with greater force.
  • The softer the sponge, the larger the pores in its structure and the thinner the pimples, the more sensitive the ball contact and the stronger the catapult effect for balls hit head-on.

COMPRESSION AT THE POINT OF BALL CONTACT

Regardless of the hardness of a sponge, a rubber with larger pores tends to offer a softer ball touch and slightly more dynamics. Conversely, a fine-pored sponge results in a harder touch and slightly more spin.

EFFECT ON SPIN + CATAPULT EFFECT

The diagram illustrates the relationship between pimple geometry, degree number, and sponge structure in relation to spin and catapult effect. The Z1-Turbo and Z1 variants with wide pimples, medium-sized sponge pores, and a harder sponge are particularly suitable for spin- and precision-oriented play.

In contrast, the Z2 and Z3 variants with thin pimples, large sponge pores, and a lower degree are designed more for fast-paced attacking play.

It can also be observed that sponges with a softer ball touch often provide players with a lower level of play or less developed technique with better ball feedback.

THIN TOP RUBBER AND THICK SPONGE

FOR ABSOLUTE PERFORMERS IN THE ULTRAMAX VERSION

For technically skilled players with a higher level of play, the rubbers in the BLUESTORM series in the Ultramax version offer even more power and spin: The top rubber has been slightly reduced to 1.7mm (instead of the usual 1.8mm), while the sponge has been reinforced to 2.3mm (instead of 2.2mm).

FLIGHT CURVE COMPARISON BLUESTORM Z SERIES

When comparing the flight curves of the BLUESTORM Z series, it becomes clear that the spin-oriented Z1-Turbo and Z1 variants generate a higher flight curve with greater curvature thanks to their harder sponge design and special pimple geometry. The more catapult-oriented Z2 and Z3 variants, on the other hand, are characterized by a longer flight path with less curvature.

In the Ultramax version, the thicker sponge combined with the increased dynamics provides greater shot length, a noticeably more pronounced trajectory, and maximum spin.

The popular BLUEFIRE M, with its speed-dynamic properties, has the flattest flight curve curvature, but a particularly extended ball trajectory.

SUITABILITY

  • BLUESTORM Z1-Turbo & Z1: For offensive, spin-oriented players who frequently use extreme angles and attack their opponents with dangerous opening spins, then finish with targeted offensive shots. Speed and catapult effect play a secondary role here; spin is clearly the main focus.
  • BLUESTORM Z2 & Z3: For all-round players who appreciate a soft feel for the ball, want to play controlled counterattacks and topspins, and maintain momentum in their game.
  • For BLUEFIRE M players, who appreciate the catapult effect of the BLUEFIRE M but are looking for even more spin and power, the BLUESTORM is the right choice.
  • Counter spin & control of the opponent: Promotes counter spin from mid-distance, enables control in difficult situations, and puts pressure on the opponent with dangerous flip returns and spin-rich serves.
  • Ultramax variant: Thinner top rubber and thicker sponge provide even more power; technical skill and regular training are recommended for control.
