Glossary: Rubber Technologies
Not only is table tennis highly complex and technically demanding, but so is the production of table tennis rubbers. To help you navigate this world of high technology, you will find explanations of some of the key terms here.
Sponge
Sponge Structure (Large-Pore, Fine-Pore, Medium-Pore)
A large-pore sponge provides a particularly strong catapult effect. This gives the rubber excellent dynamic performance and a softer playing feel. The trajectory of topspin shots follows a higher arc, resulting in a more pronounced curve.
Examples from the DONIC range:
BLUESTORM Z2/Z3
BLUEFIRE M1/M2/M3
A fine-pore sponge delivers exceptional dynamic performance and a firmer playing feel. This results in a flatter topspin trajectory, with the ball travelling on a straighter path.
Examples from the DONIC range:
DONIC BLUESTAR A1/A2/A3
BLUEGRIP C2
DESTO Series
A medium-pore sponge offers characteristics that fall between those of large-pore and fine-pore sponges.
Examples from the DONIC range:
DONIC BLUEGRIP S1, DONIC BLUEGRIP S2
BLUE STORM PRO, BLUE STORM PRO AM, BLUE STORM Z1 TURBO, BLUE STORM Z1
ACUDA S1, ACUDA S2, ACUDA S3
COPPA X1, COPPA X2, COPPA X3
Pimples Geometry
In the topsheet, long, thin pimples provide a slightly softer playing feel and more speed.
Examples from the DONIC range:
BLUEFIRE M1/M2/M3
COPPA X1, COPPA X2, COPPA X3
Wide, flat pimples in the topsheet provide a firmer playing feel and allow for greater spin.
Examples from the DONIC range:
DONIC BLUESTORM Series
ACUDA S1, ACUDA S2, ACUDA S3
Formula DONIC
In the past, table tennis rubbers were speed glued to increase their speed and dynamic performance. With FORMULA DONIC, we permanently integrated the speed glue effect into our rubbers – more than 20 years ago.
FD3
The 3rd generation is a further development of FORMULA DONIC. The large-pore and medium-pore sponges provide a stronger catapult effect and produce a higher ball trajectory.
Examples from the DONIC range:
BLUESTORM Series
BLUEFIRE M Series
FDC-Touch
A new innovation and the answer to the plastic ball. This advanced technology combines the best of two worlds in a single rubber: a tacky Chinese-style topsheet that generates maximum spin, combined with the blue tension sponge that delivers a powerful catapult effect and outstanding dynamic performance.
Examples from the DONIC range:
BLUEGRIP J Series
FDH-Touch
Optimized Energy Sponge (OPTE) – the latest sponge technology. A fine-pore sponge that, thanks to its unique structure, sets new standards in elasticity and damping. The result is outstanding catapult effect and speed. Combined with a slightly tacky, extremely grippy topsheet, it offers exceptional spin potential and guarantees maximum precision in every stroke, both in offensive and passive playing situations.
Examples from the DONIC range:
BLUESTAR Series
Tension
Tension technology is the method of permanently integrating the speed glue effect into table tennis rubbers. There are different levels of tension technology:
Full Tension
Almost all modern rubbers belong to the Full Tension category, in which the maximum possible speed glue effect is built in.
Examples from the DONIC range:
BLUESTAR Series
BLUEGRIP Series
BLUESTORM Series
BLUEFIRE Series
ACUDA Series
COPPA X1, COPPA X2, COPPA X3
DESTO Series
Half Tension
These rubbers feature an integrated speed glue effect, but not at its maximum level. They allow players to make a gradual transition from traditional rubbers to modern high-performance rubbers. For some players, they simply represent the perfect balance.
Examples from the DONIC range:
DESTO F4
QUATTRO Series
Traditional Rubbers
Many players – especially experienced players – prefer the playing feel of traditional rubbers, which offer maximum control.
Examples of traditional rubbers in the DONIC range:
DONIC VARIO Series
DONIC COPPA Series
Versions
Within each DONIC rubber series, the different versions are easy to understand:
Turbo
Turbo versions are the hardest and fastest rubbers.
Examples from the DONIC range:
BLUESTORM PRO,
BLUESTORM Z1 TURBO,
BLUEFIRE M1 TURBO,
ACUDA S1 TURBO,
COPPA X1 TURBO
Versions 1, 2 and 3
Version 1 rubbers are hard and fast
(BLUESTAR A1,
BLUESTORM Z1,
BLUEFIRE M1,
ACUDA S1,
COPPA X1 GOLD,
DESTO F1).
Version 2 rubbers represent the perfect balance. They are
medium-hard rubbers offering an excellent combination
of speed and control
(BLUESTAR A2,
BLUESTORM PRO AM,
BLUESTORM Z2,
BLUEFIRE M2,
ACUDA S2,
COPPA X2,
DESTO F2).
Version 3 rubbers are very soft and provide outstanding
feel and control
(BLUESTAR A3,
BLUESTORM Z3,
BLUEFIRE M3,
ACUDA S3,
COPPA X3,
DESTO F3).
BIG SLAM
BIG SLAM versions are ultra-soft rubbers
with an outstanding sound
(BLUESTORM BIG SLAM,
BARACUDA BIG SLAM, DESTO F3 BIG SLAM).
FDC Touch
FDC Touch rubbers are available in six different versions
with varying sponge structures and
sponge hardness levels:
BLUEGRIP J1 (fine-pore, 55°)
BLUEGRIP J2 (fine-pore, 52.5°)
BLUEGRIP J3 (fine-pore, 50°)
BLUEGRIP C2 (fine-pore, 55°)
BLUEGRIP S1 (medium-pore, 45°)
BLUEGRIP S2 (medium-pore, 42.5°)
