His unique touch for the ball, his enormous creativity, his immaculate technique and his fantastic anticipation always made his play look effortless and elegant, nonchalant and superior, in one word: cool.
His inimitable abilities helped him win all titles the world of table tennis offers and more than that: He is undoubtedly the best table tennis player of all time, fans all over the world love and adore him.

In China, which climbed up to be the undisputed leading nation only after the era of Jan-Ove Waldner and Jörgen Persson, JO is known by his nickname Evergreen, because he bested several generations of Chinese superstars.
In 2013 China dedicated a stamp to him. Waldner was the first foreigner ever to receive this honour, and more than three million copies were sold on the very first day.
It seems odd that there is no Waldner-Comic yet, for he is undoubtedly the superhero of table tennis.
A few weeks before the World Championships 1989 were held in Dortmund, the German magazine DER SPIEGEL published a preview with the headline: "Favourite: Mozart".
Waldner fulfilled all expectations, winning the most precious titles: men’s singles and team event (with Sweden). He belonged to the top players of the world for two and a half decades. Mozart remained his nickname, but for DONIC he is foremost a good friend by now.

Jan-Ove Waldner is more than a table tennis legend – he is one of the most extraordinary players the sport has ever seen. Olympic Champion, multiple World and European Champion and a player who shaped the game for decades, the “Mozart of Table Tennis” interpreted the sport in a way that was uniquely his own.
His exceptional touch, creativity and remarkable anticipation made Waldner almost impossible to predict. He seemed to read situations before they developed, constantly finding solutions his opponents did not expect. It was never just speed or power that made him special, but his ability to control a match through placement, changes of pace, variation and outstanding tactical intelligence.
His deceptive and highly varied serves were another trademark of his game. Combined with his ability to read his opponents, Waldner could dictate the opening of a rally and create opportunities for his attack. In fact, Waldner himself named his serve and serve variations, his ability to read the game and his tactical skills as his greatest strengths.
What looked complicated for others seemed effortless in Waldner’s hands. Technique, touch, intelligence and creativity came together in a playing style that remains unmistakable to this day.
Jan-Ove Waldner did not simply play table tennis – he understood the game like few others ever have. That is what made him “The Maestro”, a global icon and one of the greatest players in the history of table tennis.
